Spania legger fram forslag om skjerpet overvåking av lovlige organisasjoner og demonstrasjoner som et ledd i «kampen mot terrorisme» innen EU. Å stille forslag om å utveksle informasjon om lovlige aktiviteter og lovlige organisasjoner er særdeles rabiat. Når det kommer opp i EU-parlamentet, så er det klart at vi vender tommelen ned, sier Niels Eriksen fra den danske Folkebevægelsen mod EU til Dagbladet Arbejderen. Danmark innehar formannsskapet for høstsesjonen i EU.

Surprised that the North Koreans offered no resistance, US officials were outraged when their leader Kim Il Sung suggested that the whole operation was undertaken to win Ford the election. 'We realised that our soldiers had been taken in by the enemy's political scheme' said Kim 'so we decided not to aggravate the incident any further'. National Security Advisor Brent Scowcroft, however, did speculate that if North Korea had risen to the bait, 'Ford would have won the election'. In the event, it was Carter, who, to the irritation of his Chiefs of Staff, tried to withdraw US troops from Korea, but was stonewalled, throughout his one-term presidency. American endeavours to crank up the conflict with the North have continued, not just for purposes of domestic political consumption, but to stymie the growing mood for reunification in the South. Avisen New York Times kunne for noen uker siden melde at det sosialistiske Cuba har Latin-Amerikas best fungerende grunnskole. Gode resultater, lav strykprosent og en høy alfabetiseringsgrad gjør at kubanske elever kom best ut i undersøkelsen, som ble utført av et FN-ledet ekspertpanel. I matematikk og språkfag lå kubanske tredje- og fjerdeklassinger så oppsiktsvekkende høyt at ekspertgruppen valgte å reise tilbake til Cuba for å gjennomgå prøvene på nytt!

I kampen mot terrorismen opprettet Bush-administrasjonen et eget samordningskontor for informasjon og kommunikasjon. Dette kontoret skal nå, igjen etter lekkasjer i amerikansk presse, bli permanent. Formålet er å "spre et positivt bilde av USA rundt om i verden og bekjempe anti-amerikanisme". Greit nok. For kontoret er noe annet enn det Pentagon har planer om. Der vil man motvirke det anti-amerikanske bildet, spesielt i islamske land, med reinspikka løgn. Det kan bli både et etisk og et juridisk problem. Etisk fordi det vil undergrave bildet av USA som den "frie verden"s leder, et land som setter demokratiske verdier som talefrihet og frihet til å skaffe seg objektiv informasjon høyt. Juridisk fordi plantet desinformasjon kan finne veien inn i amerikanske medier, og det er forbudt i henhold til amerikansk lov. Politisk blir det også et problem. For skal man da kunne stole mer på "informasjon" fra USA enn "informasjon" fra land USA kaller skurkestater i ondskapens akse? 2002/02/20

Wireless networks are now cheap enough that businesses and organizations of all sizes are installing them. These networks allow employees to easily access databases, e-mail and the Internet from remote locations. But, as Xam is pointing out, they create a massive potential security risk.

If only the UK had done something similar in Northern Ireland, we wouldn't be in the mess we are in today. And that would be it really, as far as exterminating the IRA and its supporters. Easy. The War on Terrorism provides a solution so uncomplicated, so straightforward and so gloriously simple that it baffles me why it has taken a man with the brains of George W. Bush to think of it. So, sock it to Iraq, George. Let's make the world a safer place.

Gerhardsen var for tidlig ute, noe som kanskje kostet ham den politiske karrieren. For det er nye tider nå.

The American mainstream media has "discovered" the civilian casualties in Afghanistan caused by the U.S. bombing campaign. The signal of this discovery was given by Ellen Knickmeyer of the Associated Press, who recently filed a dispatch headlined, "U.S. Attack Killed Children, Afghan Survivors Say." For more than two months -- beginning with a radio interview on December 10th with Amy Goodman on Democracy Now -- I have been writing and speaking about the heavy civilian casualties caused by U.S. bombing attacks. But unlike the American mainstream press, I have argued that these innocent victims were primarily killed by particular U.S. bombing strategies, not by mistakes. The current media stories, however, still invoke the notion of bombing "errors," and more recently, faulty intelligence.

Det är mycket på en gång. Fienden är ett djur, dessutom medeltida och hans religion är bokstavligen talat skit. Korstågsandan i ett nötskal. Formuleringen väckte dock inte uppståndelse och skribenten har faktiskt kvar sitt jobb. Han är nämligen typisk. Ty den stämning av det heliga kriget som snart svepte genom de amerikanska medierna förflyttades mycket snabbt över till oss. Konsekvenserna blev flera. För det första kom svenska läsare att få hela krigsrapporteringen från amerikanska medier rakt in i svenska medier via de snabböversättare som vanligtvis tituleras USA-korrespondenter. Snart uppstod en tyst överenskommelse i hela mediesystemet om att nu gällde helt nya regler. Nu behövde källor och sakuppgifter inte längre kollas. Nå jaktes det på kunstgrep som skal gjøre Arbeiderpartiet stort igjen. Svar kan finnes til «høyre» eller «venstre» hvilken merkelapp som settes på katten er likegyldig, bare den fanger mus. Er det et fullført historisk prosjekt vi nå ser slutten på? Arbeiderpartiets ledere leter febrilsk etter en nøkkel som igjen skal gjøre partiet stort. Men det vil famle i blinde så lenge det ikke makter å heve blikket og se det historiske og strukturelle dilemmaet som har brakt dem nederlaget: balanseringen mellom klasseappell og kapitalisme-administrasjon.

This brief application of modern just war theory to the Afghan conflict suggests that its value as an analytic moral or legal framework is limited. The difficulty in obtaining reliable information makes some assessments impossible. Political biases introduce further complexities. There is, however, one component of the just war theory [---] the means of war [---] where international standards and measures do exist and a provisional assessment can be made. This suggests that the United States has missed several opportunities to establish a reassuring normative tone and presiding presence in this conflict. Instead of rooting its engagement in international humanitarian law it has emphasised the dastardly outlaw nature of its enemy to justify a need to keep its tactical options open. USA og Storbritannia hevder at de bomber Afghanistan fordi de ønsker å straffe Taliban og Osama bin Laden etter terroraksjonene mot New York og Washington. At det ikke er bevist at bin Laden sto bak terroren den 11. september, er så sin sak. Men er det noen grunn til å tro på at den egentlige årsaken til krigen i Afghanistan er kampen mot terror? Som oftest når man undersøker stormakters motiver, kan det lønne seg å gå bak det de påstår i sine egne velforberedte uttalelser og pressebriefinger. Fra tidenes morgen er stormakter kjent for å lyve hemningsløst om sine motiver, så hvorfor ikke ta slike egenerklæringer om edle motiver med en god porsjon salt? It is common to dismiss such thinking as naive or utopian at best, or driven by ideology rather than practicality. The hard-headed CEO's, IMF disciplinarians, and associated politicians at the WEF are seen as pragmatic leaders, even visionaries, who are willing to make the "tough choices" and compromises necessary to achieve progress in the real world. But perhaps the conventional wisdom has it backwards. Here in Porto Alegre, the Workers' Party -- a major participant in the World Social Forum -- has run the city government for 12 years. They win by large majorities because they have proven that the left can govern: they cleaned up corruption and waste, instituting a participatory budget process that is a model of transparency and democratic process.
